Depression and Mood
Mood changes can be due to many factors but can be difficult as they have the potential to impact so many areas of your life including family, friends, work and even your dreams and aspirations for your future. Symptoms can range from mild to severe affecting your emotions, motivation, sense of connectedness and belonging.
Depression is a mental health disorder characterised by enduring low mood and/or loss of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed. It is estimated that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 8 men Australians will experience it at some point during their lifetime. Emotional and physical symptoms are varied including persistent feeling of sadness, loneliness, hopelessness, loss of energy and motivation, concentration difficulties, social withdrawal, negative self beliefs or pessimism, and changes in appetite or sleep patterns.
There are different types of depression including the following:
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
- Postpartum depression
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder where a person experiences extreme mood swings from depression to mania.

“The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat. They’ve known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life. That fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen”. – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
